Scaling & Root Planing (deep cleanings)

When plaque or tartar is left on your teeth, it can cause inflammation of your teeth and gums, also called gum disease or gingivitis.  We will often treat gum disease with regular scaling and polishing your teeth during regular check-ups and cleanings.  So basically, scaling is simply the removal of plaque and buildup from the surfaces of your teeth.

If gum disease is left for too long, it can cause inflammation in your gums and the foundation of your teeth, causing more damage.  In these cases, Dr. Harris will use a procedure called root planing.  Root planing involves smoothening the root of the tooth by removing any infected or damage tooth particals.

Both scaling and root planing are common procedures used during your regular visits with Dr. Harris to help prevent serious infection and keep your teeth in their best health.

Frequently Asked Questions

A tooth decays through a process of bacteria and food wearing down your teeth.  That bacteria and food eventually release acids that attack your teeth after eating.  Because these acids can wear down enamel, they will also cause tooth decay.

If not treated, tooth decay can cause infection and tooth loss, but you can prevent this by brushing and flossing daily and regularly visiting Dr. Harris for check-ups.  Avoiding sugar can also help prevent tooth decay.

Unfortunately, tooth decay doesn't usually cause symptoms and can only be diagnosed by your dentist.  If tooth decay is left unnoticed and causes infection, you may notice a toothache.

If you have any questions about tooth decay or would like to set up an appointment, please contact us today.
